Castellón: a lot to discover
Located in the north of the Valencian Community, the province of Castellón is a compendium of coastal towns that host music festivals as well as castles steeped in history; of natural treasures to include in a list of 'Places to visit once in a lifetime', and of cities that have yet to shout from the rooftops about all they have to show.
Castellón de la Plana, the capital of the province, is the great unknown of the Community. Its accessible size allows you to explore it on foot and on your walk you will come across vestiges that speak of distant times, such as the Muralla Liberal, and buildings of superb architecture. As you pass by, you will see the Old Casino, its Central Market, the Co-cathedral of Santa María la Mayor and, next to it, the Fadrí, a 60-metre high bell tower.
Take a stroll around the Grau, the city's maritime district, located just 4 kilometres from the centre. In and around the Plaza del Mar you will find restaurants and bars where you can sample the local gastronomy. This is where you toast to the success of a meeting.

Castellón was not satisfied with the typical natural attractions. It wanted to be spectacular. This is why it has the Columbretes Islands, a nature reserve made up of a group of islets. The largest of these, the Isla Grande, is what remains of an ancient crater. They are two hours from the coast and can be reached by boat from Castellón de la Plana, Oropesa or Alcossebre. By the way, don't forget your goggles and snorkels. The little ones will be amazed by the variety of small fish they will see.
Going out to sea is always a guarantee of adventure. Going into the depths of the earth, too. The experience is even more exciting if it is done by boat, which is what they offer at the Coves de Sant Josep. Located in La Vall d'Uixó, the experience covers an 800-metre stretch of what is the longest navigable underground river in Europe.
A visit to the Sierra de Irta Natural Park might seem more normal. However, its mountains, which run parallel to the sea between Peñíscola and Alcossebre, make up one of the last undeveloped coastal mountain ranges on the Mediterranean coast. Along its paths you will climb to its highest peaks and descend to some coves where you can refresh yourself and get your strength back.
Villages of Castellón
If nature is a must-see in this province, its towns and municipalities are no exception. Being in Castellón, it is impossible to neglect Benicàssim, world famous for its festival, the legendary FIB. Nor could we fail to recommend that you visit Peñíscola; we would not deny you the pleasure of a swim on the beach with views of the Castle of the pope they call the Papa Luna, Pope Alexander VI.
In Vinaròs, strolls through its charming historic quarter inevitably end with bathing and games on the beaches of El Fortín and Fora Forat.
